CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

With Kravchuk’s gun pushed between her shoulder blades, Scarlet stepped up inside Shevchenko’s private train and immediately scanned everything in sight for weapons and escape routes. She hadn’t come this far to let a man like him get the better of her, but Yegor’s advice about counting coffins still echoed in her mind.

“To your right,” the cage fighter growled.

With her brother, Camacho and Jules a few paces behind her, she obeyed and found herself in a luxury carriage constructed of walnut veneers and fine leather chairs. A long bookshelf stretched down one wall and at the end of the car was a large hardwood desk shining dully in soft ambient light.

Shevchenko gestured for her to take a chair. “Please.”

Scarlet curled her lip as she took her seat and watched the large Ukrainian man collapse down on the opposite side of the desk. Camacho sat to her right, and Spencer and Jules sat on a bench seat running under the window to her left.

“Not short of a few quid, then, Leon?”

“Forgive me,” he said. “This train is my one indulgence. After the revolution, there was an attempt on my life. My private plane was almost shot down by the government and so I decided it would be safer to travel by rail.”

She glared at him. “The Ukrainian government?”

His face turned to a scowl. “I wouldn’t call it that, no. I’m talking about the puppet government the Americans and Europeans installed in Kiev.”

“You’re talking about the Revolution of Dignity?” Camacho said. He’d never used that description before and was only doing it now to provoke a reaction from their captor.

“The Revolution of Dignity?” Shevchenko barked. Behind him, Kravchuk looked like he was about to explode with rage. “When the Americans wanted to install their puppets in the Rada, they had to overthrow the sitting government first. Before this, there was much fighting and murder. My sister was one of those killed in Maidan Nezalezhnosti.”

Spencer and Jules were already losing the thread of the conversation, but Scarlet and Camacho were right up to speed. “Independence Square,” the former CIA man said calmly. “The Euromaidan demonstrations against the old government.”

“My daughter was in the army, and she was killed that day in the clashes. Killed by the Americans and the Europeans. Killed by the West, and for that, you will all pay a heavy price.”

“There are other reasons to travel by rail,” Scarlet said.

“You get a better view, for one thing,” added Spencer. He winked at Jules but she looked terrified.

Shevchenko didn’t rise to the bait. “Quite,” he snarled. “And it’s so much classier, don’t you agree?”

Scarlet raised an eyebrow. “I never go anywhere without my private train, so yes, I agree, but what I don’t understand is why a grubby little thug like you is interested in my mother’s archaeological research. What would a criminal like you want with artifacts from a tomb in Jordan?”

Shevchenko laughed. “You presume too much. Who says I want artifacts from a tomb in Jordan?”

“Black does, and you’re working with him, right?”

He narrowed his eyes.
